Kendra Dykes: Teacher
Hello my name is Kendra Dykes. I am a third grade teacher here at Milton Hershey School, and this is my MHS.
I graduated in 2010 from Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pa. with my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.
I had always wanted to be a teacher, but even more so I wanted to “change the world.”
Changing the world I found is quite a big job, but it was after graduating college and getting my first job that I realized I could change my corner of the world.
I began working at a Head Start program in a city just outside of Philadelphia. It was there that I realized I could change the life of a child, which in return would change the life of a whole family. I spent almost two years at that Head Start program teaching three to five year olds and mentoring their parents on making attainable short and long-term goals for the life of their family.
I heard about Milton Hershey School while at a Teacher Recruitment Day in the spring of 2013. In talking with the recruiter and reading about the mission of the school, I quickly realized that this could be the place where I could again change my corner of the world.
Every day since being hired at this school I have been able to do just that with my students.
It is my hope that in impacting my students in some way, I will impact their whole family. This is not a job for me, but a calling to be more than just their teacher.
It is my joy to wear many hats in one day to meet whatever the need is for my students. I love what I do and there is no other place in the world I’d rather be!
