Working in a “Teacher Paradise”

Growing up in the area, I always knew about Milton Hershey School. When I was in high school, I used to play against MHS. And one of my best friends and roommate in college went to MHS. I made a promise to him that if I ever had the opportunity to teach at MHS, I would take it.
Coming here to teach was a decision I will never regret. It has been the best decision of my life.
I teach sixth-grade math and I absolutely love my job. It’s truly special when you are part of a team and a family like Milton Hershey School. I always describe it as a teacher paradise. This is, in my opinion, the best place to be for a teacher.
Our students are amazing. They are what makes every day so much fun. They come from all walks of life and every day is a new experience. You can learn just as much from the students as they can learn from you.
The opportunity we have to get more involved in the students’ life outside of the classroom also makes MHS special. The different clubs, sports, and activities you can get involved in, and all of the resources that are at our hands are truly amazing. We are all working towards the same goal—how do we make the experience better for the students.
Working at MHS has changed me, too. It has helped me to be more grateful for the opportunity that I have to impact students’ lives. I try my best to be a good role model for them while teaching them to enjoy learning.
Any time I hear a student say, “Mr. Hurst, I love your class,” it’s very special because math is not every student’s favorite subject. If I can make sixth-grade students say they love math class, that is a win for me.
I hope that education is a positive experience for all students. There is a lot of negative in this world. Education should not be one of them. I take very seriously my role as a teacher, living out the mission of Milton and Catherine Hershey, and making learning a great experience for our students.
