Graduate Programs for Success Shares Tips for Planning College Tours
Planning college tours is an exciting milestone—but it can also feel overwhelming without the right guidance. Many Milton Hershey School graduates are the first in their families to attend college, so our dedicated Higher Education Support Specialists work tirelessly to ensure our students are supported to navigate this journey with confidence.
Whether you’re just beginning to explore options or narrowing down your final list, here are some tips to make your college tour experience more intentional, informed, and empowering—no matter where your path leads.
Encourage Your Student to Lead the Way
Encourage your student to ask questions and engage independently with staff and other students. This is the first step in your student’s successful transition to self-advocacy and navigating their college campus as a young adult.
Show Up as Your Best Self
A college tour is your chance to make a positive first impression with staff members who may review your application. Choose a business casual outfit that you feel confident in and shoes that allow you to walk comfortably throughout your tour.
Do Your Research and Come Prepared with Questions
Colleges plan visits to meet the general interests of all students. Be prepared with your specific questions to ensure that the school aligns with your student’s educational and career goals. Don’t leave campus without having all your questions answered, including those about finances, program requirements, and next steps.
Take Time to Get a Full Picture
Go beyond attending the college visit with admissions. Take time to walk the campus on your own to explore buildings where your student’s classes would be held, notice the students’ and faculty’s energy and activity, and take time to determine if your student can see themselves on campus. Explore the town before or after your tour to find local restaurants and stores that they may frequent.
Transportation Plan
It’s important to consider the location and transportation available at this college. Consider how your student would get to and from college during breaks or in the event of an emergency, or whether public transportation is available. If your student has their driver’s license, consider having them take the wheel to drive to and from the campus visit to ensure they are comfortable with the drive and distance.
College tours are more than just campus visits—they’re opportunities to envision your future, ask meaningful questions, and discover where you feel most at home. With thoughtful planning and a clear sense of purpose, families can turn these trips into transformative experiences.
