On Aug. 6, five Milton Hershey School students were recognized by the Dauphin County Commissioners for their incredible entries in the Dauphin County Cultural Diversity Essay Contest.
MHS fifth grader Virginia Lee placed first in the six through 10 age group for her outstanding essay on “How does culture shape who you are?” closely followed by fourth grader Berkeley Beene in third place.
MHS Middle Division students swept the competition in the 11-14 age group. Tiaria Pickett-Long, eighth grader, took first place, Darian Gangadin, eighth grader, took second place, and Stella Wagner, seventh grader, took third place for their essays on “How can you personally promote diversity in your school or community?”
“I think we can all agree that the kids we saw here, our future leaders, the future of this great nation is in good hands,” shared Dauphin County Commissioner Mike Pries. “There is a lot of talent coming up through Dauphin County.”

Understanding and embracing diversity is a core value at MHS, making this contest second nature to our students. Though not required, many of our students rose to the challenge by sharing heartfelt stories and unique perspectives that showcased their deep appreciation for diverse cultures. Their essays not only demonstrated academic excellence, but also a genuine commitment to fostering inclusivity within our school community.
