MHS Students Chart a Course Through the Galápagos Islands
Milton Hershey School students recently returned from an unforgettable International Learning Experience that took learning beyond the classroom and into one of the world’s most ecologically significant regions—the Galápagos Islands.

Over the Easter Break, students and chaperones traveled through Ecuador and the Galápagos as part of the school’s International Learning Experiences program, which is designed to foster global awareness, cultural understanding, and personal growth through immersive travel.
The trip began in Quito, Ecuador, where students explored historic and cultural landmarks, including Independence Plaza, the equatorial line, and local museums. These early experiences helped set the stage for deeper learning as students prepared to travel to the Galápagos Islands.

Once in the Galápagos, knowledge came alive through hands-on experiences centered on conservation, biodiversity, and sustainability. Students explored multiple islands, visited research centers, and learned from expert local guides—gaining a firsthand understanding of how delicate ecosystems are protected.
“It was magical to be there and experience the wildlife firsthand—snorkeling and swimming right next to sea turtles, penguins, and parrotfish,” said Sammy Lamoureux, an MHS junior. “Being in that environment was so enriching, and the group we traveled with made it an even more incredible experience. It’s something I’ll never forget.”
Through hiking, snorkeling, and guided exploration, students observed native wildlife, volcanic landscapes, and plant life found nowhere else on Earth. These moments reinforced classroom lessons about evolution, environmental responsibility, and the importance of preserving natural habitats.
“Actually going to another country and experiencing the culture changed my perspective,” said Lamoureux. “You realize people across the world are more similar than different. Seeing that firsthand—and learning how history and science come together to protect wildlife—really affected me and how I think about the world.”
Following their time in the Galápagos, the group returned to mainland Ecuador, where students reflected on their experience during a visit to the Cotacachi waterfall before beginning their journey home.
The Galápagos Islands International Learning Experience exemplified the school’s commitment to providing students with meaningful opportunities that expand horizons, deepen learning, and build confidence—experiences that students will carry with them long after returning to campus.
