Milton Hershey School Students Shine in Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Contest

Milton Hershey School students were honored as a part of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest for their writing and art pieces. With the intention of inspiring bold ideas, the contest awards students for their originality, skill, and ability to enhance their own voice.

This is the sixth year that MHS students in middle and high school have participated in the contest. “When we first introduced students and teachers to the Scholastic Art and Writing Contest six years ago, we had no idea the contest would become a favorite annual event. The contest is a wonderful opportunity for young adults to share their passions through creative writing and art,” shared Tiffani Rooney, a middle school language arts teacher at MHS.

MHS students submitted pieces of writing and artwork in critical essay, drawing and illustration, poetry, personal essay and memoir, and short story categories. Nine students received honorable mentions, seven students earned Silver Key awards, and one student received a Gold Key—the highest award in the competition.

“Being able to take part in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards contest was so valuable to me, because of the limitless range of expression I had at my disposal; the contest gave me the opportunity to give a piece of myself through my writing,” shared Gold Key winner and MHS senior, Wyatt Oatman. “That is an invaluable gift and opportunity.”

At MHS, all students are given academic opportunities to challenge themselves and stretch their abilities. “It was a real joy to work with these students on their artwork and entries,” said Corinne Edris, a middle school art teacher at MHS. “They all put in a lot of effort and time, and while not everyone was recognized with an award or certificate, I hope that the process was beneficial and that they continue to pursue growth in their artistic developments and explorations.”
