Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Learn about Milton Hershey School at Informational Event

Milton Hershey School held an informational event on Tuesday, Sept. 25 specifically for grandparents raising grandchildren. Families learned more about the school program, enjoyed a complimentary dinner and tour of campus and a student home.

“We focus on whole-child approaches at Milton Hershey School,” said MHS Admissions Counselor Stacey Spangenburg. “Your grandchild is able to pursue their passion whether it is the arts, a career and technical education pathway or working with animals. We are going to give them the essential skills they will need in the real-world.”

The MHS Admissions team shared information about the school’s scholastic and home life programs which include cost-free wraparound services such as medical and dental care, clothing, food, a safe and secure campus, and the ability to accrue scholarships for postsecondary endeavors.

“More than 85 percent of our students go on to some type of postsecondary education,” said MHS Admissions Counselor Pat Turnpaugh. “Whatever the next best step for your grandchild, we have a team of dedicated employees that are going to help your grandchild pursue their dreams.”

A Life-Changing Phone Call

Current MHS senior Thalia Vega shared her experiences at the school providing grandparents a glimpse of what life would be like for their grandchild at MHS. Thalia lived with her grandparents and attended 14 schools prior to MHS. When she was 15, she received a life-changing phone call that she was accepted at MHS.

“My one goal is to try every opportunity provided to me at MHS.” “I’ve already completed an internship, traveled internationally, mentored younger students, participated on the yearbook committee and have worked with animals.”

Thalia will graduate in June 2019 and aspires to attend college and pursue a degree in criminal justice.

A Grandparents Decision

Amy and Stephen Hill also provided remarks to the crowd. They currently have three grandchildren enrolled at the school.

“This was the hardest decision we ever made to bring our grandchildren to MHS,” said Stephen. “But once we learned more about the school, we told our grandchildren we love you too much not to provide you the chance to enroll at MHS.”

The Hills shared their appreciation for the caring staff at MHS, and the joy they feel knowing their grandchildren are enjoying their childhood while excelling in their academics.

“We were sitting where you are right now four years ago,” said Amy. “I know where you’re coming from, and it can be scary, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m so glad we did it.”
