Behind the Chocolate Curtain: MHS Students Get an Inside Look at the HERSHEY Movie
A select group of Milton Hershey School students stepped into the world of filmmaking with an exclusive, behind-the-scenes visit to the Pittsburgh set of the upcoming HERSHEY movie. The experience offered a rare and inspiring look into the creative process behind a film that tells the story of Milton S. Hershey and the success that made possible the enduring legacy of the school he and his wife, Catherine, founded.
The students toured the production office and sound stage, observed live filming, and participated in a Q&A session with the film’s producers, Sharon Paul and Mark Tilghman. The experience was designed to expose students to the wide range of career opportunities available in the film and media industry.
“From set design and wardrobe to props and graphics, students got a firsthand look at the many exciting careers that exist behind the scenes of a movie set,” said Mindy Harmon, MHS Graphics Arts Teacher. “It’s a priceless experience at any point in your life—let alone as a high school student. We are grateful to have been a part of the day.”
During the visit, students engaged directly with the production team, learning about the roles of producers, directors, set designers, and other crew members. The Q&A session with Paul and Tilghman offered insights into the storytelling process and the challenges of bringing a historical narrative to life on screen.
“It’s an honor to help bring this story to life,” said Tilghman. “My hope is that when the Hershey community sees the movie, they feel a sense of pride in what we’ve created—and that it inspires people everywhere to live bolder, be kinder, and pursue their purpose with the same passion Mr. Hershey did.”
Paul added, speaking to students: “What I hope you take away from this experience is how much heart, research, and hard work went into telling this story and ensuring that it is historically accurate. Yes, we took creative licenses for specific reasons, but we carry a weight of responsibility to honor these remarkable people and do it justice. We are eternally grateful for the collaboration with the Hershey entities to make sure we do just that.”
Between takes, students even met with lead actor Finn Wittrock, who portrays Milton S. Hershey, along with several of his castmates. The group discussed the craft of acting and the preparation that goes into embodying a historical figure. The actors shared personal insights into their roles and offered advice on pursuing a career in the performing arts.
The HERSHEY movie aims to highlight the extraordinary journey of Milton S. Hershey—from chocolate magnate to philanthropist—and the enduring impact of his vision through Milton Hershey School. For the students, the experience was not only educational but deeply personal, as they saw their school’s story being honored on a national stage.
“It was a life-changing opportunity to experience something that seemed unattainable, and now after seeing it all come together, it’s a career I believe I can pursue,” said Ethan Long ’25, who is interested in going into filmmaking.
Added Princess Tommy ’25: “At first, this experience was overwhelming. But the producers were so welcoming, and it’s eye-opening to see what it’s really like behind the camera. It opened my eyes to the field and gave me the opportunity to network with industry professionals.”
This unique opportunity reflects the school’s commitment to providing real-world learning experiences that inspire students to dream big and explore diverse career paths. As the cameras rolled on HERSHEY, the students returned to campus with new inspiration—and a deeper appreciation for the legacy they carry forward.
