Four MHS Students Speak at Diversity and Female Empowerment Event
On Wednesday, Sept. 12, four MHS Senior Division students were invited to speak about female empowerment during the Hershey Area All Things Diversity event.
Sharice Johnson, MHS Senior Division, Student Programs Leader, spoke at the event and shared information about Milton Hershey School’s Young Women’s Alliance Club and Girls Grace event. In addition, MHS junior Diana Creech and seniors Nashaya Goodman, I’Yonna Jones, and Najiyyah Pendleton spoke about the meaning of women empowerment, the positive impact of MHS mentorships and activities on young girls, and their plans after graduation.
“Growing up, I had female figures in my life, but they didn’t always have a positive influence on me. My whole life, I had this incredibly inaccurate perception of womanhood,” said MHS junior Diana Creech. “Once I enrolled at Milton Hershey School, the game changed. I slowly began breaking down the stereotypes of women and replacing them with an exciting reality – I could be whatever I wanted and I was free to embrace who I was.”
MHS senior Nashaya Goodman shared the impact that the MHS Girls Grace event had on her: “Girls Grace provided me with examples of positive women interactions. It brought high school girls together without jealousy or drama. It gives us something to look forward to together. Because of Girls Grace, I want to better understand and support my fellow ladies.”
Milton Hershey School believes in a whole child approach to education. Students are encouraged to join clubs and activities, like Young Women’s Alliance and Girls Grace, to help build their self-confidence, expand their growth mindset, and enhance their social intelligence.
