Milton Hershey School — 110 Years and Counting

Since our founding in 1909, Milton Hershey School has been helping young people break the cycle of poverty. For 110 years and counting, MHS has been a place where students’ potential is met with life-changing opportunity.

In our 110 years worth of experience, we’ve been providing an excellent education, college and career readiness, and best-in-class care to our students. Our educational model is centered around the mission of helping students lead happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives—just as our founders, famous chocolate maker Milton Hershey and his wife Catherine, intended.

Thanks to the Hersheys and their generosity, we have been able to develop and maintain a model focused on a whole child approach to education and programming centered on preparing students for the modern workforce—two things we’ve been doing since the school was founded more than a century ago.

Our holistic approach to care includes wraparound services at no cost to our students’ families, including medical, dental, psychological, behavioral, and social work services, as well as food, clothing, and a nurturing home life. Our staff acknowledge and address the specific challenges children from poverty face, both inside and outside the classroom, so they can be successful in all aspects of life. At MHS, kids can be kids without the worries poverty creates in their lives.

This approach also involves preparing students for life after MHS with career and technical training that has been engrained in our curriculum since Mr. and Mrs. Hershey established the school. Over time, our career tech curriculum, which started with a focus on agricultural and mechanical trades, has evolved into our award-winning Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.

Career and technical education at MHS

Today, our CTE program includes 11 career pathways that range from Automotive Technology to Law, Public Safety and Security, with a 12th pathway being added in the 2019-20 school year. The career pathways are comprised of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), problem-solving principles, and hands-on experiences that align with the current job market—making our graduates more competitive and prepared for the 21st century workforce.

Our vast experience as one of the world’s best private, residential schools has earned us the honor of being a leader in the field of education. We are proud to share our knowledge with others so we can continue our collaborative work to strengthen the future of America’s children.

We welcome you to join us throughout 2019 as we celebrate 110 years and counting here at Milton Hershey School.
