The 1914 Horn

In 1914, Mr. Feese, leader of the popular Hershey Band, comes to the campus of the Hershey Industrial School to GIVE music lessons to the students. He brings instruments for them to use and introduces the students to playing their instruments in a group. When Mr. Hershey sees that there is continued interest, instruments are purchased for the school.

The MHS archival collection contains a horn from that time. According to the horn’s serial number, the New “King” Upright Eb Alto horn was from the 1911 catalog and made in 1915. In this photo of the first school band from the 1923-24 school year, it is pictured with the student in the third row on the right end.
