In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, Milton Hershey School interviewed several teachers, across all three scholastic division, to recognize their important role within the MHS community.
What’s one thing you wish people understood about your job?
Teaching is far more than pluses and minuses, dates in history, or commas and semicolons—teaching is building trust-centered relationships that enable young people to embrace the course content.
What are the biggest challenges and most rewarding parts of your job?
Time and competition are the most paramount challenges. There is a need to devote more time with some students and the gift of time for independent discovery to other students—all while balancing the workload with the understanding that they have competing interests (other courses, extracurriculars, social life, etc.). When a young person experiences and recognizes personal growth—big or small, academically, or maturity-wise—those are the times I feel most gratified.
What made you want to become a teacher?
I became a teacher as part of my passion to give back and serve others. I believe working with young people allows me to give back now and well beyond my years as they carry seeds I have planted with them into the future.
What grade do you teach? And how many years have you been teaching?
I teach primarily 11th grade, but I have students from 9th-12th grade in my elective course (Diverse Voices in Contemporary Literature). I have been teaching at MHS for four years.
