Celebrating Joy and Community Spirit During the Holidays at Milton Hershey School

By Pete Gurt ’85, MHS President

Though I like to say that every day is a Breakthrough day in Hershey, Pa., I have three favorite seasons at Milton Hershey School:

  • Kicking off a new school year
  • Celebrating the end of a school year
  • Feeling the joy of the holidays

During the holidays, our campus becomes a picturesque scene, inviting the spirit of the season into the hearts of all who call MHS home. There is a sense of warmth, unity, and excitement. Every December, MHS students, staff, and alumni come together to create magic that reflects the true meaning of our home and school: hope and opportunity.

From decorated Christmas trees to twinkling lights across campus, this December did not lack in festive cheer. This year, our holiday celebration was more vibrant than ever before. We kicked off the season by participating in the tree lighting ceremony in downtown Hershey, Pennsylvania. Time-honored traditions made their way back to Founders Hall, including a fully lit Christmas tree and our Noontime Concert Series. I truly believe there is no better way to feel the spirit of the season than by listening to MHS Visual and Performing Arts students.

MHS honored the holidays through musical performances at a special Noontime Concert Series.

But what I love most about this season are the smiles and joy on our students’ faces as they embrace the magic of the holidays. MHS staff go above and beyond to bring the wonder of the holidays to life. From Milton’s Christmas Workshop where students learn the joy of giving to gingerbread decorating competitions, visits from Santa Clause, and an Elementary Division Christmas party hosted by alumni, there were many reasons to smile.

Each year, I am in awe at how our community comes together to create lasting memories and foster a sense of belonging for every MHS student. As the campus sparkles with lights and laughter, the spirit of Milton and Catherine Hershey’s vision comes alive. Without a doubt, the holiday season at MHS is truly special for all who are part of this unique and caring community.

From our family to yours, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

The Spirit of Giving During the Holidays

MHS students learn the art of budgeting and the joy of giving at Milton’s Christmas Workshop. The event allows Elementary and Middle Division students to buy thoughtful gifts for their families as they prepare for the holiday season. This year’s workshop returned to Founders Hall where the decorations were bright, and the magic of the holidays came to life.
