My Journey as a Student Athlete and Soccer Player at Milton Hershey School

By Gage Thomas, MHS Junior

Being a member of Milton Hershey School’s soccer team has significantly shaped my experience as an MHS student. First and foremost, being a part of this team has surrounded me with a supportive community of players and coaches that have helped me through the good and hard times. I’ve created lasting relationships with students across campus because of our mutual love of playing soccer, high expectations for ourselves and one another, and understanding of the importance of teamwork.

We are a team on and off the field. Last season, as a goalie, my fellow soccer players have helped me achieve long sought goals that have helped me to be a better player.

Additionally, the soccer team has helped me with achieving the best version of myself in my academic goals. With similar schedules, some of my teammates and I often study together and help each other in classes that we take alongside one another.

The MHS soccer program also continues to provide experience for me as we participate in off season training and practices and games throughout the winter months. This extra time to be able to hone my skills has been incredibly helpful. The facilities at MHS allow this year-round conditioning to be possible. I’ve also been given the opportunity alongside four other selected players from the MHS soccer team, to play for one of the best PennFC teams in Pennsylvania and attend several showcases to present our skills to college scouts.

I have learned many things as a student athlete and MHS soccer player, but most importantly, I’ve gained leadership skills, time management knowledge, responsibility, and a no quit attitude. I hope to pursue soccer at many levels after graduating from MHS, while also coming back to the school to give back as a soccer coach. The MHS soccer program has given me the confidence I need to succeed and I hope to one day impart that on students who walk this path after me.
