What I Wish I Knew Before Enrolling at MHS

Students from all over the country are enrolling at Milton Hershey School. These kids are all at different stages in their lives, all with similar backgrounds and struggles. I remember my time before MHS and how the prospect of coming to this school opened up an endless hallway of open doors for not just my present, but my future as well.

At the age of 11, I couldn’t fully comprehend the opportunity that was placed at my feet. But I knew my mother and I wouldn’t be considering enrolling if it weren’t for the betterment of my life. I had my fears and doubts coming to this school, but I didn’t want to let down my friends and family who were so happy for me being accepted.

I can say now that I don’t regret my decision to enroll.

At home, I wanted to do so much more but I didn’t have the means. Life was hard and not always the best for me. Being here has given me the security and stability I didn’t always have at home.

MHS has also taught me different life, social, and moral skills I would have barely scratched the surface of at home.  I have become stronger in my faith and learned more than I ever had.

With these blessings came a few downsides, as all good things do. In the beginning, one of the biggest challenges was homesickness. I missed my mom and beloved pets. I wanted to be able to come home after school and see them, not a list of chores or activities I had to attend. It was hard at first, but I soon realized it was all for the best. With the help of my friends, peers, and houseparents, I have been able to make it this far.

The adults at MHS care so much. Letting them guide and help you is definitely advice to be taken seriously. Don’t be afraid to make connections with adults or your fellow peers, because they can be a big help later on. I learned that lesson quickly— when I struggled in certain areas, someone would always be there to help me through the frustrating situation and get me back on my feet again.

Before coming to MHS, I wish I would have known how much of a difference it would make in my life. Although I’ve been through many challenges and still have more to come, I know that the good always outweighs the bad.
