Building a Successful Future: Sebastian’s Engineering Internship

Sebastian, a rising senior at Milton Hershey School, has wanted to be an engineer since he was young. After enrolling at MHS in eighth grade from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he deepened his interest in engineering by joining the Engineering and Design career pathway within the school’s Career and Technical Education program.

To expand his knowledge base, Sebastian decided to participate in the summer internship program. He worked with Whiting-Turner to gain experience with general contracting and construction management.

“This particular internship interested me because it’s related to engineering and how it applies to other careers and professions. They’re all intertwined,” he said.

Sebastian was exposed to various aspects of the company, including bidding work, visiting job sites, and touring plants.

“Whiting-Turner provided me with a lot of different opportunities to immerse myself in what they do on a day-to-day basis,” Sebastian said. “I try to be a sponge and do as much as I can.”

Thanks to his internship, Sebastian has clear ideas of his goals for the future—and gained life skills he will carry with him after graduation.

“If I wasn’t here, I definitely wouldn’t be doing an internship. It’s something unique at my age,” he added. “MHS gave me the opportunity to really understand what an internship can do and it gives me better insight into [the future].”

As for his future, Sebastian is focused on success and being a role model to others.

“In the future, I want to be successful and enjoy my profession,” Sebastian said. “I want to make a difference in the lives of others, and for my siblings especially, I want to be someone they can look up to—a role model.”
