An Open Letter to My Younger Self

Sky, I know you’re oblivious to it all right now. You have not felt the storm quite yet, only viewed it. I promise it gets so much better from here.
It starts with two people in your life who will make the biggest difference: Nana and Pap. You won’t understand their love the first time you visit the big town that’s supposed to smell like chocolate. You’ll soon hear of Milton Hershey School—your first sense of hope. I promise your heart will begin to call it home. You’ll be mad at Pap for a few years, but one day you’ll turn around and say the words that mean the most, “Thank you, I understand.”
At times, your faith will be weak, you’ll worry about every single thought, and you’ll question all of your moves.
I know this will scare you, but you’ll learn you have perseverance deep within you. A heart nurtured through the world of MHS blossoming around you.
I promise you will learn how to be a kid again. You don’t have to be an adult at 11 anymore—you were never meant to grow up so quickly. You’re scared of change now, but soon you will embrace it because you’ll learn God is your constant. Sky, you will do things you wrote down in your chubby green journal with a lock as strong as your eight-year-old hopes and dreams. MHS will give you the opportunity to make your dreams come true when you’re 16 and travel to Europe. You will gain new perspectives after this experience and face your fear of heights when you ride The London Eye!

I want you to embrace everything around you—your passion for being on Student Government, or your love for helping others such as mentoring the elementary boys in Helping Hands. One day, those large marble walls in Founders Hall will be a comfort and hold more memories than you ever expected.
You will learn the people here embody family. You will learn it’s okay to dream big. If your dreams do not scare you, then they’re not big enough.
MHS will give you the opportunity to meet people God has saved for you to meet until you could understand why you need them. MHS will teach you that life is about learning to fly, not just to float. Remember, your current situation is not your final destination.
