Milton Hershey School Teacher’s Selflessness Highlighted by CNN Business
Featuring Matthew Pierce, MHS Senior Division Teacher
Matthew Pierce, a Senior Division history and government teacher at Milton Hershey School, was profiled this week by CNN Business for the way he has gone above and beyond for students.
This spring, MHS modified its operations in the face of the pandemic so it could remain open as a life-sustaining organization to provide care and resources to its students who come from low-income families across the country. While many students remained on campus, others returned to their home communities at their parents’/sponsors’ choosing.
Seeing the need and having grown up in a low-income household, Pierce decided to go above and beyond and use the stimulus payment he received to buy Uber Eats gift cards for many students who returned to their home communities.
“MHS does a great job of providing for our students and I just wanted to do something extra that could help them get food without going out during the pandemic and brighten their day,” Pierce said.
Pierce also shared how important it is to him to be a good role model as a teacher and mentor.
“We have to model good civics. It’s not something we’re born with,” Pierce said. “We need to give back in times of need.”
MHS continues to provide students with holistic care and support, following a comprehensive Health and Safety plan so students can learn in-person, in the classroom during the 2020-21 school year.
