From an early age, Josi Daugherty ’17 had big dreams. Growing up just outside of Clearfield County, her guidance counselor told her family about Milton Hershey School when she was in elementary school.
“My mom was a single mother and struggled financially to take care of me and my two older brothers,” Josi shared. “My mom saw a better future for me and decided to send me to MHS in fourth grade.”
As a student at MHS, Josi flourished academically. She enrolled in specialized law, public safety, and security classes within the school’s Career and Technical Education program where she received hands-on learning experiences and industry-recognized certifications.
She also discovered her passion for helping others by joining various clubs and extra-curricular activities on campus.
“I realized the importance of focusing on the activities I was most passionate about. Those activities were the Mock Trial team and Student Government Association,” Josi said. “Both taught me important skills like advocacy, presentations skills, and how to care for the well-being of others.”
These life lessons impacted Josi’s success during high school, and after graduating from MHS in 2017, they continue to benefit her as a college student. Thanks to her dedicated work ethic and ability to advocate for herself, Josi is studying secondary education at Penn State Harrisburg—and plans to graduate in three years instead of four.
“MHS prepared me for my next step into college by teaching me simple skills like professionalism, time management, and how to be independent,” she added.
After graduating from college with a bachelor’s degree in education, Josi hopes to one day serve as an advocate and leader within the education field and help provide new curriculum to underserved school districts. From growing up as a bright elementary student in Clearfield County to excelling as a college student and achieving her dreams, Josi relies on the support system she gained at MHS to guide her through every milestone in her life.
“Milton Hershey School isn’t just a school, it’s a home,” she said. “The relationships I made at MHS are ones that last a lifetime. If I’m going through tough times, there is always a staff member encouraging me and reminding me that I can do anything.”
