Young Milton Hershey School Students Turn Pizza Chefs

In the summer months, students in pre-K through 12th grade participate in age-appropriate activities that make learning fun through Milton Hershey School’s Year-Round Experiences (YRE) program. During creative lessons and hands-on activities, even our youngest learners are practicing valuable skills such as fractions while also being introduced to concepts they will soon learn in the classroom.

Recently, pre-k and kindergarten students made homemade pizza (covered with their favorite toppings) as the culminating activity for the week-long math skills and fractions lesson. Throughout the week, students learned about the pizza-making process and decorated their own aprons and chef hats to get ready for their day in the kitchen.

“The unit was based on K-1 early learning standards and we added a creative spin,” Adrienne Mannino, YRE instructor, said. “During YRE, students make positive memories that they will remember for years down the road. It allows them to just be kids and have fun.”

After patiently waiting for the pizzas to finish in the oven, MHS students demonstrated their understanding of fractions when cutting their pies and enjoying together.

This year’s YRE activities allow students who are living in the same student home to play and learn together which minimizes co-mingling as part of the school’s COVID mitigation strategy. The YRE instructors and MHS staff wear masks and practice social distancing while keeping the energy high and engaging with students for a full day of fun and learning.
