Lynn Scully ’81 describes her experience at Milton Hershey School as life changing.
“[When] I was enrolled, my mother was trying to raise three daughters on minimum wage,” Lynn said. “She was looking for a place that would provide us with an education.”
Lynn’s mom stumbled upon Milton Hershey School through a recommendation from a friend. At the time, MHS was only for boys.
“She was told that Milton Hershey School was planning on enrolling girls and she should call,” Lynn said. “She did and six months later I was enrolled. That was June of 1978.”
Lynn says she thrived at MHS, taking advantage of all that was available to her.
“We didn’t have enough girls at the time for a lot of athletic teams, but they did put a cheerleading squad together,” she said. “My senior year the basketball team won the state championship. I remember being out on the floor at Hersheypark Arena, and I couldn’t hear myself. [It was an] electrifying experience.”
Lynn attributes most of her life skills to lessons she learned at MHS. Including how to be a parent and how to live – and more importantly – thrive in a community.
“This place was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she said. “That shared experience, that shared commonality of knowing this is home. It was safe and provided us with every opportunity to be whatever we wanted to be.”
Lynn currently works as a financial advisor in Florida.
